Surge Of Submissions For Young People in Care

A SENATE Inquiry considering the plight of younger Australians in aged care has received a surge of submissions from the disability sector ahead of its first hearing scheduled for Perth next week.

Last November, after hearing the stories of young people in aged care, West Australian Senator Linda Reynolds secured bipartisan support for a Senate Inquiry into the adequacy of existing residential care arrangements for younger Australians with physical, mental and intellectual disabilities.

Senator Reynolds said the inquiry has already received over 120 submissions, which is a clear indication of the seriousness of the situation.

“While each submission is a unique story, the messages conveyed are powerful and consistent,” Senator Reynolds said.

The Senate Standing Committees on Community Affairs is comprehensively examining the options and alternative accommodation available for young people with disabilities through the inquiry and will report its findings mid-year.

“I very much look forward to hearing more from younger people, their families, carers and the organisations that support them throughout the hearings,” she said.

“It is important we listen carefully and act accordingly to ensure younger people with disabilities have access to the appropriate tailored care, support and services for their individual needs.

“As a society we can do much better and this inquiry presents a great opportunity to do so.”
