Senator Reynolds welcomes work beginning at Sutherlands Park
WA Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds welcomed the construction of a synthetic turf at Sutherlands Park at a sod-turning event today.
Senator Reynolds said she was delighted the Federal Government had invested $1.3 million towards the much-needed project.
“Children growing up in the south-eastern suburbs deserve to have the same access to the good quality sporting grounds as the rest of Perth, but unfortunately this hasn’t been the case at Sutherlands Park,” she said.
“The lack of suitable turf has meant the Southern River Hockey Club has been forced to travel to other locations to play home games for 12 years.
“This funding will allow for the construction of a synthetic hockey turf with an irrigation system, fencing and flood lighting at Sutherlands Park, meaning children at Southern River Hockey Club will finally be able to play a home game on their own field.
“I’m proud to have fought for and been able to deliver this important project, alongside former Liberal candidate for Burt, Matt O’Sullivan.”
Southern River Hockey Club president John Heath said the project was on track to be completed by December this year, in time for the start of next season.
“This has been a long time coming and I’m ecstatic that it’s happening,” he said.
What this means to the community is immeasurable. We’re putting in the best possible turf, which will allow us to bring games to the City of Gosnells.”
The project will cost a total $2.616 million, with the remainder to be funded jointly by the City of Gosnells, Southern River Hockey Club and Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation.
